BBC Fake or Fortune?

Cow at Rest watercolour by James Orrock

Cow at Rest watercolour by James Orrock

It is so exciting to be watching a quality art programme on television and hear the name of an artist that I have bought for A&A.  It is James Orrock, R.I. and R.O.I., 1829-1913.  Here is a photograph of the piece I bought whilst in Devon, and is now available to buy.  It is small but perfectly formed.  Entitled ‘Cow at rest’, signed pencil and watercolour.

The programme was discussing whether this artist had a hand in a painting by John Constable (1776-1837), that was being tested as a potential forgery.  The conclusion was that Constable most probably did paint ‘A Sea Beach Brighton’ and that James Orrock may have had a hand in painting areas of the sky in the painting – he is well known for doing this!
